Classic is demoted to "Specialty Format"

Pretty awesome end of classic events though.

Time to rename this site Legacy Quarter.
Odissey was themed with with threshold and Mudhole gave red access to an hability that fitted thematically and normally isn't on it's pie, that's why it's rare.

Forums are up

As we get closer to the date, we'll have more separation.  I still need to figure out what's going on with some of the statistics

Cry What does it mean to be a "specialty format"?  I assume it means that it isn't part of the normal DE/PE rotation.

It means it will have 1 6 ticket 24 player minimum a weekend... and NO DEs.

but who knows... maybe they will add a few more if we fire them?

I have been waiting for this announcement for a while. This is good news and we shall see how well MTGO can support the format. I'm hoping the MED3 farewell events are going to be announced next week.

Ooohh, interesting. This is something I missed in Wotc_Eric's announcement.

Was there any announcement for a MED3 Farewell pack that would be sold in the store next week too?

I expected this to happen once I heard the news of the new  largest  event ever. Though I'm excited to see legacy finally arrive, I'm curious of the Future of what was once called Classic. The fact that they are not completely killing it makes me assume they are still on the bring Vintage online wagon. I hope that I am correct.

Also, since it's now going to be a core format that is supposed to be identical to paper what are they going to do with all of the cards the format needs and doesn't have yet? Maybe this means they will release important cards that won't be out for a while in some fashion. Duel decks, FTV, MOCS etc.

Lastly, Psionic Blast... Really?

"I will go to any length to achieve my goal. Eternal life is worth any sacrifice."

Eternal for life.

Actually there are not that many Legacy cards (which matter) missing, and half of the missing ones will get added with Urza's Saga.

What is interesting is that the article doesn't mention that there are a few cards missing from the format. That is rather naughty, since the paper players we all hope will now come online might not necessarily know that.

Anyways...At last! Legacy! Happy now!

I'm pretty sure Maze of Ith and Rishadan Port are pretty important to the Lands deck.

Those, plus tempo-based aggro control needs Sinkhole to hit full power.

I actually want to figure out every single missign card from Masques and Pre-Mirage that is used in Legacy and campaign to have them all in MED4. Part of this plan also calls for the non-release of Masques block and instead just including the cards in MED4. It is going to be a colossal failure and the cards will cost a bit too much. I know I won't want to sit aroud drafting it.. and I drafted all 20 duals from MED2 :)

Alas, poor classic. I knew it well Horatio.

WTF did they tell us we were a core format less than a year before they demote us? and WTF are we supposed to do with our Oaths if we only get one tourney a week where they are legal?

Pissed classic player is pissed.

Omg I have to buy those force of wills soon. I mean, as soon as tomorrow or something...

Worst thing is, I speculated Vintage would become Classic one day, now Classic became Vintage... at least sort of as being a "specialty" format.

Omg I need survival, too. This new format may be the most expensive experience in my life ( after girls, of course ) as I don't even some cards in paper for it...

Goodbye Bazaar of Baghdad, hello Putrid Imp.

At the time, we were a core format, and it probably wasn't in their plans to demote classic until after they saw how low the attendance was getting for the DE's (thank bad time slots for that)

Play in the weekly classic tourney I assume.  Either that, or sell them and buy legacy staples with the tix.

Don't get me wrong, I understand why they did it. But the timing seems to lack any rhyme or reason. I would have expected a split after Urza, but not for them to essentially kill off our format, especially after making us all feel safe in the knowledge that they viewed us as a "core format", rather than "a core format until we put legacy online". I think those of us who bought Oaths/Bazaars/FTV: Exiled/etc. were duped into thinking we were going to have a place to play all of those cards, and then they pull this crap.

I think that at the very least Wizards owes the classic community (especially Danger) a letter of intent. Do they plan to eventually bring vintage online or not? Because if the answer is "not" then we might as well sell off all our classic-only cards right now, because we won't be able to play with them in any significant way anymore.

The timing seems to make a lot of sense to me. I mean is kind of sucks for the Classic regulars, but they are coming off of that amazing Legacy GP - the largest Magic tournament OF ALL TIME. Strike while the iron is hot.

Also you're right, if the next Master's Edition doesn't have power then Classic/Vintage will suffer a gigantic blow - maybe even the death blow.

I am surprised that they did not put the "Legacy coming to MTGO" announcement on the front page of the Magic Website...

I mean if they are going to do it they should let everyone know...

Here are the biggest masques block cards that would be missing IMHO:
1. Rishadan Port - No good replacement, backbone of some strategies (Lands, goblins)
2. Misdirection - No replacement, popular card for many U archetypes
3. Food Chain  -No replacement enables it's own archetype or pairs with goblins as "plan b"

Other notable role-filling cards that see play, but not nearly as necessary to the Legacy format. IE, they have acceptable replacements or not intergal part of any particular winning strategy at this time.

Unmask
Flame Rift
Abolish
Accumulated Knowledge
Cave-in
Dust Bowl
Foil
Thwart
Hoodwink
The Rishadan Pirates
Kor Haven
Nether spirit
Parallax Tide
Parallax Wave
Reverent Silence
Rootwater theif
Sandstone needle and it's cycle
The "Free if" creatures (Skyshroud Cutter, Sapprazan legate)
Soothsaying
Submerge
Tangle Wire
Vine Drayd
Waterfront bouncer
Woodripper

It should be noted that any of this list could become very popular if a "new" legacy deck emerges.

Masques will be released as "normal" sets are, because they have huge casual potential. The block is a boon to tribal players (the elf-fetcher guy in particular will be expensive I'm sure).

Also, mentioned above, some non-masques cards like Maze of ith and Sinkhole are very real parts of the legacy metagame.
