REGISTRATION FOR QT #4 IS AVAILABLE ON GATHERLING.COM. REGISTRATION ENDS MAY 18th:

www.gatherling.com

Classic Quarter and Clan Magic Eternal Presents:

The 2012-2013 Classic Quarter League featuring The Classic Invitational

The first QT will commence on Monday August 13th. Decklists as well as donations are due by 11:59:59 PM Eastern Time on Saturday August 11th, no exceptions.

Some of the details have been spoiled already, but I'll just jump right in:

The 2012-2013 Classic Quarter League feat. the Classic Invitational (henceforth referred to as "The League") will be a year long (henceforth referred to as "Season") League that will culminate in a Invitational-style tournament. During the course of the Season, there will be 4 Qualifier Tournaments (QT's) that will coincide with the release of each major set release (the Summer Core Set and the 3 Block sets; Return to Ravinca Block for this upcoming season).

Format of the QT: Each QT will be a Swiss tournament with rounds lasting one (1) week long, similar to the Classic League run by MMogg. There will be 5 rounds of Swiss followed by a cut to the Top 8. If participation goes over 33 players, there will be 6 rounds, etc. The QT will start promptly 2 weeks after the release of the set in the client and run for approximately 2 months. Prizes will be awarded to players in the Top 8 based on their final standings. Pairings during the Swiss rounds will be run through DCI Reporter. At the end of each match, the winner will send the results denoting who won and in how many games to classicquarterleague@gmail.com including a screenshot of the final result.

Format of the Classic Invitational: The Classic Invitational will be an invite-only tournament that will be held on a Saturday after all of the 4 QT's have finished. This will be a single day event of 6 rounds of Swiss, regardless of the number of entrants, followed by a cut to the Top 8. Prizes will be awarded to players in the Top 8 based on their final standings.

How to Qualify for the Invitational: Players will automatically qualify for the Invitational if they finish in the Top 8 in any single QT during the course of the Season. Players can earn up to one (1) bye in the Classic Invitational for a second appearance in the Top 8 of any other QT. Any Top 8 appearances beyond the first 2
will not award additional byes.

How to Register for a QT: Send an email to classicquarterleague@gmail.com with your mtgo username and your deck list (saved as a .txt file from the client).  Naturally, each deck must be Classic legal. Your e-mail address will be made “public” to those that also signed-up for the tournament, so please use some discretion and use a personal account instead of your work account, etc.  Anyone caught trying to register multiple accounts will result in a permanent ban from the League and future Seasons.

Entry Fee: Each QT will be free to play, however, to encourage the maximum number of participants, for each QT we suggest a minimum donation of ~10 tickets or an equivalent value in Classic Playable cards; foils will be gladly accepted. There will be no fee or donation required for the Invitational. Donations will be 100% transparent and visible to everyone, though they will be kept anonymous if desired. When making a donation, please specify if it will be for just the upcoming QT, or to go towards the entire Season. Please find either me (enderfall) or unlockingthevault (my secondary account holding the donations) in client to make your donations.

Prizes: Any donations for a QT will be distributed ~40% to the QT and ~60% to the “kitty” for the Invitational. The Invitational prizes will be accumulated during the course of the QT Season. We are in the process of trying to line up sponsors for the Classic Invitational. If you would like to donate directly to the Invitational, please e-mail classicquarterleague@gmail.com to express your interest. Sponsors from Websites/Bots/etc. will have their logo posted here and will be promoted amongst the various Classic Community contributors. Clan Magic Eternal has already pledged 20 tickets per active member to go directly to the Invitational “kitty”. The idea is that by the end of the 4th QT, the prizes for the Invitational will rival those of the Player of the Year race that was discontinued in early 2012.

Here are the prizes for QT#1:

1st Place: Invitational Invite + 48 Tickets PLUS Choice of 1 from Lot A and Choice of 1 from Lot B
2nd: Invitational Invite + 36 Tickets PLUS Choice of 1 from leftover Lot A
3rd/4th: Invitational Invite + 18 tickets each PLUS Choice of 1 from leftover in Lot B
5th-8th: Invitational Invite + 5 Tickets PLUS Choice of 1 from Lot C or 2 from Lot D:

Random Door Prize #1 (open to everyone outside of Top 8): 4x Foil Ingot Chewer + 4x Foil Promo Hymn to Tourach + Foil Lord of the Unreal

Random Door Prize #2 (open for Everyone): 2x Gaddock Teeg + Ill-Gotten Gains + Infernal Tutor

(Lot A: Foil Promo Ponder, Foil Promo Brainstorm, Foil MM Brainstorm, Foil Enlightened Tutor, 4x Foil Noble Heirarch)

(Lot B: Foil Time Vault, Foil Flash, Foil ME4 Sol Ring, Foil Promo Qasali Pridemage, Foil Hermit Druid, Foil ME2 Necropotence, Foil Snapcaster Mage; 1x Foil Promo Mondronen Shaman, Foil Standstill, ME4 Demonic Tutor)

(Lot C: 2x Foil Trygon Predator, 1x Foil KvD Knight of the Reliquary, Foil MM Dark Ritual, Foil UL Tinker, Foil Dream Halls)

(Lot D: Foil FTV Balance, Foil Duplicant + 4x Foil Slash Panther + Foil Lodestone Golem, Foil Llawan, Cephalid Empress, Promo Bloodstained Mire, Promo Kitchen Finks, Foil Promo Savage Lands + Promo Savage Lands, Promo Living Wish)

Here's a shout-out to our sponsors:

The Classic Invitational is scheduled for
July 20th, 2013 and will start at 12:00pm (noon) Eastern Time (UTC-5). The hope is that this is well enough in advance for people to plan accordingly.

Also, the plan is to stream the matches of the Classic Invitational, LIVE, on twitch.tv or another streaming service. We hope that the coverage can be somewhat similar to GGSLive and SCG providing match-up analysis and commentary. More information will follow as we get closer to the event.

For those interested, a few players have indicated that they would be happy to record other people's matches to provide commentary during the QT season. If you would like your match recorded and happen to see the following people online, just message them and ask them to record the match:

  • enderfall
  • Cronin

***In the event that WotC blesses us with full Vintage on MTGO during the course of a Season, the current active QT will play out as scheduled and any future QT's (including the Invitational) will switch to the Vintage format.***

While I won't be able to participate I would like to help out, if you guys would like a 1 on 1 deck tech video of your deck posted up, PM me on here, we'll meet up on skype and I'll review the decklists with you, play the BDM to your deck mastery, ask all sorts of questions and such :) I won't publish any of the videos until the event heh.

Is it just me, or is this thread way less popular than I was expecting it to be?

No one else planning to join in?

If you're planning to join, why not post something here? If people see a lot of entries, it might give them the incentive to also join.

As it stands, it seems no one is interested in this. Or I am being paranoid?

Enderfall, perhaps you can keep us posted on number of entries, as we approach the cut date?

That's par for the course.  I would say, usually 80% of the entrants register in the final 48 hours.

No doubt about that (I haven't registered myself yet :P). I was just asking to post like wild dog, above, stating intent to join.

It just seemed strange to me that so few had answered, but I guess that's the just the fear in me talking. :P

What about you MMogg? Joining the fray this time around, now that you're not on TO duty?

Have no fear, you throw enough prize support at an event and it will stick. LOL

I'm going to try my best to join, yeah, but not 100% sure, so I haven't said anything in the thread.

I'll provide a thorough update tonight, but if you include those that have commented in this thread, there's more than a half dozen that expressed interest, and about a half dozen more from CME that have yet to sign up. Considering this is only Tuesday morning, I think that's par for the course, maybe a little better.

Have no fear I have sent the word out to almost everyone that placed in an event in the last 2 years other than people I know will have seen this thread already and positive responses are starting to roll in.  Pete Jahn is also adding info in his article and BlippyTheSlug will point anyone he can think of in our direction since he had great numbers for Ham On Wry.  So in short get your decklists in people I will be submitting mine tonight.

We are up to 7 commitments, either on this thread on through full deck registration. From the donation thread, you can see that we have a steady flow of donations coming in.

I think we are certainly well on our way to having at least 30 players in this first QT, and our hope is that as interest grows, each QT will have more and more players as we lead into the Classic Invitational.

I've been thinking about it.  I've been away from Magic for about a month and have been considering putting it down permanently (well until I start playing again; nobody ever really leaves Magic for good).  But one game a week would probably be do-able.  So that's why I haven't posted - I haven't been sure about it.

So are the decklists due late Friday night or late Saturday night?  "Midnight Saturday" is ambiguous to me.

Hey guys. Count me in as well. I'm at work right now so I don't have access to my decklists. I keep forgetting to sign up when I get home - on the off chance I continue to forget (its my b-day week/end and work & home have been super-hectic) I will use the exact same list I used in the last league season, but I will try my best to update and submit a proper list. Just wanted to let you know I intend to play. I will also try to cobble together a donation but cash is super-tight these days (damned women!)

I sent an email signing up for the first qualifier.  I would like to donate 10 tickets for the event, so please hit me up at the same name in game so I can give the tickets for the prize pool.
Thanks for setting this up guys, its much appreciated since classic needs something fun to get people back in the game.

One question:  The way this is written, I can't tell if you guys are asking for 10 tix worth of donations for each tournament, or 10 total.  I had gotten the impression from the initial "poll" post that it was a 10 ticket for the whole series request.

Another question:  You have gathered an impressive array of prizes for this already, but as near as I can tell no plan for distributing these prizes has been presented.  How will the prizes be allocated for the 4 qualifiers and the invitational.  Inquiring minds want to know.

Assuming I don't get sidetracked by the baby, I'll be sending in an entry, and I have a donation in mind too.

Frankly, there is no simple answer. Specific to the donations, nobody is required to donate anything. It was our goal to raise new donations for each QT season, though if someone wants to make a donation clearly marked for the entire QT Season up front, that would also be acceptable. I'll revise the 1st post to reflect this. Sorry if it was unclear.

As far as distributing the prizes, it's stated that we will split what we collect roughly 40/60, with the later going to the Invitational. It's impossible to say at this point in time that 1st Place in the upcoming QT will receive XX in prizes since we do not know the full extent of the donations. I will say that it is my expectation that the prizes for the QT will go something like this: 35% to 1st, 20% to 2nd, 10% to each of 3rd and 4th, and ~6% to 5-8th.

In case people are curious, we are already up to 21 entrants, with several people claiming that they will join (I just haven't received their decklist). I expect registrations to pick up in the next 36 hours as we close on the deadline.
